Seeking Balance, Maintaining Sanity

Balance for sanityLife is busy.

I think this has become a constant in a lot of people’s lives, including mine. Between work, writing, family, church, scouting, and the myriad other activities that cram into each week, it seems I’m always half an hour away from being late for something. That mad scramble can add stress and make life feel frantic and a bit overwhelming. Even though I enjoy all of the individual activities, sometimes I wonder where I can cut back.

Part of the answer is, I need to find the right balance.

None of us can do everything, and trying to is what drives us to breakdowns, stress, and a loss of enjoyment of the very activities we’re sacrificing so much to participate in.

We need a balance.

I love writing, and I’m thrilled with how well my books are doing. I have big plans for releasing more books, and for writing new stories. I could easily work late into the evening every night on those goals alone.

But then my family would suffer, my day job would fail, and life would get miserable.

So I look for balance. Last week, during the school spring break, I chose to step back from the many tasks on my plate and spend time with the family. We took a couple days off and visited the Oregon coast. Bandon is a town we haven’t visited before, but after one visit, we love it. It was chilly, and the water was cold enough that just walking in the surf started literally freezing my feet. I got early onset frostbite. Pretty amazing, but worth it.

Here’s a couple of the views we enjoyed:

Although I didn’t get as much writing done as I might have otherwise, I strengthened my relationship with my family, and I added to the well of creativity I draw from while working my art.

Another great event I enjoyed when I could have been writing was the Mormon Tabernacle Choir’s presentation of the Messiah concert. For Easter weekend, it was a special treat to enjoy the incredible performance, which is available online for a time here.

This week, I’m motivated and renewed, and working hard on writing projects such as:
